My spouse follows a Marji’ that permits music. What must I do? 834 469 The Office Of His Eminence Sheikh al-Habib

QUESTION:

I follow Sayyid Sadiq al-Shirazi, but my wife follows Sayyid al-Sistani. As you know, music of all kinds is forbidden according to Sayyid Saqid al-Shirazi; however, Sayyid al-Sistani permits some forms of it.

My wife plays quiet music to help our crying baby sleep, which is not forbidden according to her Marji.

What is my religious duty in this situation?

ANSWER:

In the Name of Allah, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful.
May Allah bless Muhammad and his Family and damn their enemies.

You must prevent her from playing music to the child, and she must abide as you are the guardian. That said, if the music is not ‘‘lahwi’’ (music played in places of immorality and debauchery), the prohibition is based on an obligatory precaution, according to Sayyid Sadiq al-Shirazi. As per the rules of Obligatory Precaution, you may refer to the next most-knowledgeable Marji’ who deems it permissible.
